What do you do for a living?

Let's hear it! What do you do for a living? Did you go for something to support your horsey habit? Do you work in a job with flexible hours to make horses easier? Do you work with horses?

As for me, I'm a horse girl. I've only had horse related jobs my entire life but I'm potentially changing that soon. Rather than blabber on, I present you my job (all pictures taken in the last 2 weeks... I have roughly 10,383,665,721,986,362 baby photos and most of them are terrible like this. Babies are hard to photograph on an iPhone because they're constantly moving.)

Technically a yearling and not a foal. Still super cute.

Leaping!

More of the same foal running around. Mom does. Not. Care. "Must eat grasses."

Foal and Mom enjoying a lovely sunrise

Different foal, same sunrise :)

Would of been SUPER cute, but then there's Mom's nose!

The little forelock tuft's babies get just kills me!

  1. This changes as of Monday for me! I start a new job in a new city where my soon-to-be-husband will be working on his MBA. For the last year and a half, I've worked in marketing with a lot of equine clients. Yep, there's actually a legit company that does that on a big scale. On Monday, I'll be working less in marketing and more on the technical/digital side of things managing email campaigns for a huge institution. It's all about being able to pay for ponies though! Right now, I don't have a ton of free time to ride but the goal is to get to that point after I've "paid my dues."

  2. aw so cute! i've always dreamed of having a horsey job... but the market around here is so competitive and available positions aren't always very secure or high paying... so it's too hard to justify the college degree and student loans... therefore it's the 9-5 desk job drudgery for me (fortunately in a field i do truly enjoy) to finance my horse problem haha

    1. I love my horsey job, I really do, but paying the bills is ROUGH. It's not what I'd call secure, high paying, and there are no health insurance/401Ks/any other benefits. I don't even get sick days. :) If I have to take a day off, I need to either "make it up" by working my day off or taking a pay cut. But, plus side, I work with adorable foals and my dog is my coworker.

Student loans are the worssstttt. Ugh.

  3. I work in the tech area, usually with local govt because they tend to have good office hours and be somewhat flexible. It pays a little less than if I were to work consulting, but I like the hours and the stability + more time for the ponies!
I've done the horsey job thing and liked it but could never really make ends meet - also I got a bit burnt out and didn't have the drive to ride my own horses.

    1. That "making ends meet/potential burn out" thing is where I'm at. I'm glad you've got a different job that is more stable and allows for more pony time! Pony time is key to happiness. :)

  4. I used to be a graphic designer for an art museum but after moving to the States the job market for graphic design was so, so competitive, I went with my other passion: animals. I am a licensed emergency and critical care veterinary technician at a big small animal specialty hospital in MD. The money is not enough but the schedule allows for 4 days off a week to have fun with my horses! (I work three 12-hour shifts/week). I worked briefly as a horse trainer and later on as a riding instructor but came to the conclusion that my hobbies are much more enjoyable if I don't make a living out of them. :)

    1. Oh that's awesome! I'd love to be a graphic designer (huge artsy fan here) but like you said, the market is insanely competitive. I'm definitely NOT good enough. :) How do you like being an emergency vet? I could imagine that would be pretty stressful.

  5. Different kind of babies for me! I'm a midwife, so I deliver human babies to fund my horse babies :)

    1. Haha! I told my dentist a couple years ago what I did and he said "oh so you must make *whatever high number he seemed to think nurses who deliver babies made*?!" and I was like, um no, I make not even close to that. He told me to find a new profession. I chuckled.

  6. I win the most boring job award. I release medical information to third parties. Which mostly means I stand at a photocopier or get yelled at on the phone all day. But hey - pays for my horse habit! :) Those baby pics are adorable!

    1. Wow, admittedly that does sound boring. Good for you though! After having crazy, busy high stress jobs my entire life, I don't think I could do that! But whatever pays the horse bills right??

I take hundreds of photos/videos a month of the mares and foals. I have to clear them off my phone every few months because I run out of memory. :) Poor phone!

    1. One of my dreams in life is to be a stay at home mom.... Without the kids.

I'm still working on it. ;)

How did you like being a project manager? I love the idea of it on paper (I'm a huge fan of keeping people on track and organizing) but I think it'd end up being too stressful for me in the long run.
